Mr. Oliverez is beginning his 3rd year at MCHS. He currently teaches Government/Economics, US History, World History, and supervises the Poetry Club.
With his long hair and beard, he is often compared to Hagrid or a Mexican Gandalf - both of which he considers a compliment :-)
He has taught in a number of school settings in East Palo Alto, Watts, San Jose, and South County. His experiences include continuation schools, juvenile hall, charter schools, as well as comprehensive school sites. Mr. Oliverez has also worked as a Case Manager in local group homes and as a Cognitive Behavioral counselor working with recently released felons.
Mr. Oliverez has worked for Mc-Graw Hill writing standardized and in his younger days he was a wedding DJ, studied martial arts, ran for local office, served as a Planning Commissioner, self-published, owned a coffee shop, and even learned to play a little guitar and drums.
He can currently be found playing D and D and Magic The Gathering on game nights with his daughters and occasionally with fellow MCHS staff and lecturing students on their need to do their best and remain curious.
Mr. Oliverez attended Palma High and graduated from Salinas High in '92. He went on to Hartnell where he transferred to UC Santa Cruz graduating with a degree in Literature and Sociology. He received his teaching credential and Masters in Education from Chapman University and is currently completing his Tier I Administrative Services Credential.
His hope is that all students are college-ready upon graduation and prepared for whatever path they choose to pursue after high school.
